Ten Percent

Holy holy, here is the one hundredth post.  I will honor the occasion by offering up my interpretation of the top ten percent, my favorite ten posts.  According to the new Happy documentary, happiness can be increased by entering 'the zone' often.  By writing these posts I've found myself in my own version of 'the zone' many times over.  I know there are a few of you out there reading this, thanks for hanging out.  And Stacey, thanks for the friendship, partnership, and motivation.  Here are ten posts that have made me the happiest, in a random sequence.

The Pickpockets are playing!

Hi Friends!  If interested, The Pickpockets will be playing a show at Urban Lounge on July 18th.  Also on the docket:  Bearclause, The Folka Dots, and Jay William Henderson.  Hooray!  We are so excited to be playing with these awesome acts.  Here is our latest video, a quick backyard single take with Dave Komatar behind the camera.

We're also playing a private party Sunday night.  Our last (semi) private event was when we played Art on Iowa's second gallery showing.  I love playing these types of events.  Or maybe I just plain love playing.  I feel so lucky.

Hope to see you on the 18th!

The Pickpockets and Vertical Diner

A few months back Kelli and I were excited to be invited to play some Saturday night music at Vertical Diner.  A bunch of our friends turned out for a listen and also to eat the best vegetarian/vegan diner food around.  Good times were had.

As I was putting this post together today, I found myself immediately overcome with a major desire for some of their amazing food.  So I grabbed the user's manual for my new old Polaroid land camera (for some alone time reading material) and headed their way.

The Johnny Cash

I had one of their sandwich specials, the Johnny Cash.  Ohh, I'm remembering it as I type, wow!  Wowewowwowwow!  Black bean burger, tempeh bacon, grilled peppers and onions, cheeze, magic sauce (a spicy bbq sauce), toasted garlic bun.  Mashed potatoes.  Gravy.  Incredible!  I threw in an iced coffee, and grabbed a peanut butter soy milk shake to go.  What a meal.  I will definitely be back for more.  By the way, my sister in law Amanda especially loves them for their Gluten Free options.

With a happy tummy I gathered my things together.  On my way out the door the latest issue of SLUG caught my eye, the cover of which was illustrated by my talented friend Sean Hennefer.  Awesome and congrats Sean!

So, thanks for reading.  And, go eat!

Cheers,
Heather

Thanks for the band pics Arie!

Art on Iowa

Gallery Stroll is definitely something to be looked forward to. On the third Friday of each month, various galleries around the city display the works of artists of all sorts. Winter walks are nice, but Spring really tends to up the ante, luring the community out to enjoy a shared experience along with the warming weather. The other night Kelli and I were lucky enough to be invited to play some music during Art on Iowa's gallery showing.

Iowa Pickpockets

Camille and Tim, the beautiful hosts of the evening, turned their charming home into a gallery to, for this round, showcase the incredible hand drawn landscapes of Michael Ryan Handley.

We were honored to play and impressed by the number of those in attendance. After wrapping up our second set, I enjoyed spending time looking around not only at Michael's art, but also at some of the items around the home. Really, it was one of those types of places that just inspires creativity, that reveals so much about the essence of its inhabitants. Oh, and I would be remiss if I failed to mention Rita, one of the best dogs I've ever made the acquaintance of.

We had a wonderful time playing, and had some time to enjoy ourselves as well, you know, 'off the clock'.  I especially enjoyed having the opportunity to speak with Michael and learn about his process for the series of landscapes he had created. Tim also offered up some spontaneous Elliott Smith covers that we enjoyed singing along to.

Oh, and one of my favorite things happened before the night had even started. Here is how The Pickpockets were described on the invitation:
The Pickpockets aren't actually pickpockets, but you might want to keep an eye on your watch fobs just in case. They are Kelli Moyle and Heather Leeflang, and their voices, two vibrant contraltos, mix perfectly with acoustic guitars into lovely, minimalist two-part harmonic waltzes and down tempo arpeggios. We're very excited to have them play for us. -Art on Iowa

I can't wait to discover the artist that will be presenting at Art on Iowa's next installment.
